Icarus – The Price of Ambition
Group exhibition: Nothing in Common but the Camera (2024)

“Icarus – The Price of Ambition” reimagines the mythological narrative of Icarus, recreated it into a chiaroscuro style inspired by Baroque masters – Caravaggio and Rembrandt. The series bridges classical art and modern photographic story telling, exploring themes of light and shadow, aspiration and consequence, ambition and mortality. This project invites the viewers to reflect on human struggles, merging the allegory of mythology with contemporary issues.
The mythology of Icarus serves as a metaphor for ambition’s duality. It symbolizes the potential to elevate and capacity to destroy. Each piece represents a pivotal moment in his journey, from the exhilaration of flight to the tragedy of the fall. These moments are captured through emotive gestures and dramatic lighting- creating an emotional resonance that transcends time. This series is not just a retelling of an ancient story, it is a meditation on societal expectations of success and their impact on mental health.
At its core, this work is about the weight of ambition and the human condition. The story of Icarus resonates because it speaks about the pressure or striving for greatness in a world the often quantifies self worth with achievement. These pressures create distortions in identity where achievement can overshadow one self. This leads to a fragile sense of self worth that crumbles when success isn’t achieved. The dramatic contrast of light and shadow within these images reflect this tension, showing both the ambition and its potential to fracture one’s sense of self.
Throughout the series there are symbolisms that is being used in poses and wardrobe reinforcing the fragility of human ambition and the danger of overreaching. The harsh shadows that fall across the figures are as much about external pressures as they are about internal struggles. These visual elements aim to create a dialogue with the viewer, encouraging self-examination about their relationship with ambition and the cost of pursuing success.
This project draws inspiration from the storytelling power of Baroque art and its modern extensions. Caravaggio’s “The Calling of Saint Matthew” and Rembrandt’s “Self Portrait with Two Circles” demonstrate how chiaroscuro tends to create an emotional depth and narrative focus. Similarly, contemporary artist like Gregory Crewdson and Yinka Shonibare have influenced the project’s ability to frame universal human experiences within cinematic compositions. Their work inspired me to use light not just as an aesthetic device but as a narrative force that amplifies the emotional stakes of each scene.
Ultimately, “Icarus – The Price of Ambition” explores universal truth and serves as a warning. It challenges contemporary notions of success while highlighting the mythology’s relevance. This series challenges viewers to think about their personal goals and the social influences that mold them through exploring the fragility of human ambitions. The project aims to highlight the timeless ability of art to address life’s intricacies by merging allegory with visual narrative.
